Silver Linings

To wake up to a day
in its crunchy brightness,
I longed for a full night’s sleep.
But whiffs of warm breath
aimlessly crisscrossing
under a shared blanket
seem just enough
to complete my dreams.

Laughter packs the room,
with tangs of steamy soup.
I realize the togetherness
in being tied up,
the lost time rescued
from under heaps of lazy excuses.

Roads take me on a detour.
Blouse creased; hair unkempt,
it’s now that I notice the variance.
Innocent questions,
imaginative explanations.
Half eaten cookies
sitting naughtily in the drawer,
toy cars that hide inside my bag,
never failing to restore a giggle,
along this all-embracing ride.

It’s all about letting go.
And adding meaning to what is left.
Like unexpected showers in spring
that bring sudden splashes of colour to lives.

To see what still twinkles
amid inevitable changes...
Those silver linings,
behind each grey cloud,
seen only with a fresh pair of eyes.
