Unsung Melodies

I am someone who loves to document every bit of my travel stories and life incidents. But sometimes, many events remain undocumented, only because of being so engrossed in that moment or having much fun, that there was no reminder for grabbing the camera to capture them. Such times become memories that we actually never forget. They are the unsung melodies of our life!

This rainy season, we took a road trip to Sakleshpur from Bengaluru. Kris and he boys were with the cousins in their uncle’s big car, because they wanted to play road trip games and listen to their favorite tracks. In my sister’s car, it was just me, my sister and my father… Well, in hindsight, actually there was another unseen member traveling with us…my mother’s memories!

It was so natural for us to start listening to old Hindi film songs and some old Marathi “mood songs” from the 70s and 80s . One by one, they kept playing in a rhythm, unfolding one memory after the other… My mother used to listen to these songs while doing her chores. We used to do our annual Diwali cleaning and the same songs would play on an audio tape — side A for one film and side B for another! My father always has many interesting stories to tell about each film song , its music director, lyricist and the singers. His knowledge about movies is outstanding. As my sister drove, I was juggling between being a navigator and playing the songs. Baba was actually the RJ, giving us some trivia with every musical note! Honestly, the journey of about five hours through a hide-n-seek of rain and sun just went by in no time! It was almost like our mother was right there with us, letting us know which song she wanted to hear next..

That weekend, at Mugilu, a homestay in Sakleshpur, the rain never stopped! We had three cottages, separated by a narrow pathway full of wet leaves, ferns, leeches, tall trees swaying in the wind and constant rain! Reaching from one cottage to the other was an adventure in itself! There were four Indie dogs that selflessly kept showing us the way!

On one such drenched evening, the weather called for staying indoors with music, scotch on the rocks and playing cards! This homestay is designed for a screen -free holiday. There were no TVs. The kids were sitting in the balcony, looking at the dance of the tall spice plantations with peppercorns and bay leaves, playing some quizzes and eating onion fritters, noodles and nuts. The grown-ups, on the other hand, got engrossed in many-a- game of poker! Turns out that Baba is actually very good at it! He taught my newly-turned-fourteen son how to play poker. We used UNO cards as fake money and went on with our games as the frivolous windy evening melted into a night spiked with insect buzz! This has been my best unphotographed memory of the trip so far! We just lost the count of time. The dogs came to call us for an extraordinary country style dinner, served at the rain-deck, a five minute walk through the twisty rainy plantations! Of course, the hill treks with cows, muddy streams, leech attacks and strange insect bites also contributed to the ambience. Just that continuous hum of the rain, flavored with old Hindi film songs playing in the background, the humble meals and the most memorable family time was what made this weekend getaway so special!

In the earlier week in Pune, when I met my girls gang from school, the “Gol Gappa Gals”, we spent almost the entire night playing endless laughter-filled games of Pictionary with our unique combination of rosado wine and spicy banana chips! After a laid-back evening swim followed by a giggles-n-gossip stroll by the rolling greens, we spotted a dancing peacock surrounded by four peahens! Again, very special memories undocumented in pictures!

Each time, moistening my lashes, these unsung melodies still continue to play in my mind long after returning to the desert…

New You

I like to give life a chance,
of a completely unusual encounter.
A tiny variance in thought patterns,
with slight nuances of liberation.
The lingering beauty,
as it renders to my soul,
yes, each journey does change me!
Renewed, when I return to the mundane,
the old seems likable again,
under the soothing shades of the new.

Pink Rhythm

Mulled misty morn
blurred with distant birdsong.
Curving country paths
steer me to a pristine pond.

Eyes miss a blink,
to a sea of pink,
as water lilies wake up
to the ode of spring!

My mind takes a pause
in unspoken meditation,
as buds sway mildly
upon calming water currents.

On a laidback dawn breeze,
as dewy birdwings flap in glee,
my heart flies high
to that special place,
in dreams, yet to see.

In awe, I look on forever,
preserving a remarkable memory.
For the time when a lonely soul shall seek
the silent pink rhythm
of a thousand mute water lilies…

:: Describing a "wow" moment upon witnessing the Talay Bua Daeng (Red Lotus Sea) in Thailand at the wee hours of dawn. I have never experienced a scene like this one. In the midst of a thousand pink water lilies, time as though stood still in meditation. The last stanza from Wordsworth's "Daffodils" comes to my mind ---
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils. (water lilies!)

My verse echoes this exact feeling!
I now know what 'wealth' the show to me has brought!

Journeys become Destinations

On a quest for a difference,
we set out with each other.
Half of this life lived,
yet the search continues.
And all of a sudden,
the new seems well known,
and the familiar, renewed.
I could not know
what I sought after,
was with me all the time.
It was this togetherness
that kept us going ---
to be filled anew;
to be vacant again.
Life is the journey.
Life is the destination.
And this very realization
fulfills a lifetime!

The Gift

A wandering spirit
absorbed in longing,
holds in the moment,
a drifting desire.
With musical breath,
intense gazes glide.
Barefoot on moist sands,
your hand tucks in mine.
Tide ebbs.
Thoughts surge.
Paired heartbeats count
as the sun sinks low.
Waves weave
a foamy wreath
around our skin.
Your voice hums.
I listen with eyes closed.
I sense your scent,
once again renewed...
The sky curls
into a hushed nightfall.
The gift of your traces
I now carry in me.

Arid

A half lit dune
chisels himself on wind
in gracefully arched seams.
Sands print their flowing tones
with shadowscapes of wave-like textures.
Fading layers of high and dry mountains,
peak up in rock-strewn landforms
and scattered water ponds like broken glass
mirror slivers of sculpture in stone.
As desert goats grazing on loose ends of a bush
find respite under its confined shade,
I realize the beauty of arid landscapes ---
Beauty, that comes to those
who mould their selfless souls
to become one.
with the earth.

Boundless

I feel your presence anew each time ---
a never-ending crinkled fabric of coolness;
rushing waves in bouncy sparkle,
playfully prod to the glistening shores.

Tiny hands build castles by your bay.
You enter their world of engrossed play.
Fond messages carved onto your coast,
dissolved into neverland by a blameless splash.

An intense push onto soaked sands,
then you hold me gently in moving stillness …
The sound of your breath, a meditative tune
caresses me into a day dream.

Hidden in breezes of salt swept stories,
a heart forlorn drowns the unwanted,
where many a treasure lay buried forever
with secrets of your deep boundless spirit…

Hazy Dazed Austria

Grey cloak wraps around uncountable hills,
their once snowy peaks entangled in clouds.
Like spires of old tall baroque churches
in a frail weave of unseen sunrays.

Cobbled neat paths line the jade river -
a bursting life line for each quaint town.
Sculptures immovable as towering guards -
a constant guide into the ancient era.

Hazy air enlivens many a humdrum existence,
rendering each scene in its own scent.
Life flows along endless undulating greens,
innocently curving onto country roads .

Raindrops chase the sun gleams away
and the monsoon winds ruffle my tresses.
Generous plazas contain straying thoughts,
as swinging grasses impishly revive them.

A still emerald lake snuggled within
giant conifers and lush rolling vales.
Amid many a sashaying blue- necked duck,
a lone silver swan sails calmly.

Let us keep wandering onward,
pleasant surprises to encounter.
It is in such lost moments,
that love is realized anew.

As white skies filter golden sunbeams,
wild flowers kiss the rippled waters…
I call for you all the more
to relish this breathtaking journey.

With the scurrying vagabond breeze,
that tickles some roused senses,
immersed in Austrian gemeutlichkeit,
an ever dazed trio, craves to see it all.

Remembering Petra

Her patterned ruddy robe
of peaches embedded stone.
Like a liquid pink river,
flowing down the sky dome.
She had vastness of the sea.
Fossilized at every turn,
the tunes of eternity
whispered untold stories of her admirer.
A fluid rosiness wraps around
endless sands that have seen it all…
Between skies and the earth,
a lane goes back in time.
Yet she has always stood there
swaying her hips in their fullness.
Wandering around her hollows,
many a weary traveller left enticed.
The evening paints her in a darker shade.
She becomes a warm shawl
embracing her beloved by night.
Music translates into the scent of the desert.
Listening eyes look up to stars that peep
from the sky --- a cut out in her molten form.
We stood motionless against her current,
knowing not how intensely
her heavenly beauty had engulfed us.

~ I fondly remember celebrating my birthday at Petra ,by night , with 1800 candles! I captured in my mind, all that Kris couldn't, in his camera ...
